There are a few sports at Langley that don’t classify under athletics and are actually clubs instead; one of those is boys volleyball. The boys volleyball club consists of two different teams, an A team and a B team that each have twelve players.
“We only have 1-2 practices per week, and sometimes don’t have one at all,” a sophomore player on the team, Ethan Osurman said.
The lack of practices comes as a result of the club having to rent out Langley’s auxiliary gym when they want to use it for practice and its availability schedule. That isn’t the only struggle with having boy’s volleyball as a club. Other problems include finding coaches, managers, and other teams to play.
“I found out about the guys’ team because a few of my friends are on the volleyball team,” freshman manager Kimia Nowbahar said.
Many of the boys on the team are passionate about volleyball and have been playing for years, while others just started playing recently.
“Most of the players on the B team started playing this year, and most of the players on A started playing right before the team got created last year,” Osurman said.
The team has mainly been playing other club teams around the county and have around the same season length as the girl’s volleyball team. Many of the players hope to make the club an official sport.
“A form has recently been sent out to every Fairfax high school asking boys if they would be interested in trying out next year,” Osurman said. “If every school gets 10 signatures it will most likely become an official varsity sport.”
The club focuses on volleyball skills, but also the enjoyment of the sport and the team atmosphere.
“My favorite memory with them [the team] is how excited they get when they win games and how they always manage to stay positive,” Nowbahar said.
