The Langley girls’ varsity basketball team has been dominating, winning and persevering. With practices daily almost every week, every skill they train is put into use during their games.
“It’s been great,” head coach Amanda Baker said. “We are improving week to week, which is very promising as we get closer to the end of the regular season.”
On every team there will be skills to improve on from shooting to rebounding, but there will also be strengths to use to the best of their ability. As the season progresses, Coach Baker has taken notice of both and works with her team to improve.
“Our transition offense has been a really great strength for us this year, we’ve really been able to generate lots of points in transition,” Baker said. “We had a couple of early losses that we learned a ton from and we’ve been better from.”
During a season every player has a game that stands out the most, it can vary between players and coaches. For Baker, it was the one against Robinson.
“The team was so connected all game and was really committed to the game plan. I think it was our most complete game,” Baker said. “Robinson was a tough team too, so I loved that we were able to execute when the stakes were high.”
But every Langley student knows about the McLean rivalry. For senior center Peyton Daley, beating the McLean team has been her favorite moment of the season. The game was an important win for the team but also a show of their teamwork and strength.
“We were all working well together and overall had a good game,” Daley said.
This year, the freshmen have made quite the impact on the team, with four girls making varsity. Alice Allen, Helena Hernandez, Ali Glantzis and Mariah Armah have become a part of the team and put in the work. They demonstrate their abilities and their love for basketball and keep everyone on their toes.
“Our freshmen have been great additions to the team. They are a hardworking group that loves to be in the gym,” Baker said. “Having the four of them has been good for me as a coach because it has been reminding me to not skip any steps with teaching.”
The team dynamic is one of the most important parts to being a successful team. Our girls team has bonded well over the season and has created a light-hearted atmosphere to play basketball in.
“All of the girls have been so welcoming to all the freshmen, and have been really good role models,” Freshman Alice Allen said. “I think we work well together, everyone plays off of each other and plays as a team.”
With the regular season coming to an end on February 13th the team has a record of 14 wins and 3 losses, losing to only St. Johns, Madison, and Potomac high school.
“Playing against St. Johns was probably our toughest game this year, but a great experience,” Baker said. “Their level of athleticism and physicality made it very hard to create one-on-one.”
Overall, this season has been incredible for the Langley’s girls team. They have an amazing record and are in great standings for the season. Playoffs begin the week after the regular season ends, with their hard work and continuous dedication they can go all the way.
