In an extremely close, six hour long face-off, the Langley girls tennis team defeated McLean on Wednesday, May 25 to claim the title of regional champions.
“Last year, we won districts but lost at regionals against McLean. So it’s really nice that we were able to beat them this year,” said senior captain Rorie McQuade.
Out of six singles matches, four players – junior Kathryn Emery, sophomore Vivian Louthan, senior Rorie McQuade, and sophomore Jenny Liu – had victories.
Toward the end of the tournament, with the score at 4-4, the deciding tiebreaker came down to the last doubles match, with sophomores Jenny Liu and McKenzie Malpede. When the duo defeated their opponents, Langley players flooded onto the courts to celebrate their new regional title.
“I thought [this tournament] was a really big step for Langley girls tennis. We haven’t been to states since 2002, and I feel like we have a good chance at winning,” said junior Kathryn Emery.
The first round of the states tournament will be held at Langley on Tuesday, May 31 at 3:00.
