Sweat dripping, coaches yelling, fans cheering, this was Langley Volleyball`s last chance for a win, it was against one of their most fearsome rivals, Stone Bridge. They had not beaten Stone Bridge since 2007, but this was the game that all changed.
Senior Night marks the last game of the regular season. Langley was crushed in the second and fourth sets but came out on top in the first and third sets. In the last set, Stone Bridge scored seven consecutive points yet the game ended 15-12 with a Langley victory.
“After we won, I saw a boost in our confidence because sometimes we can start off games slowly. This win showed us that we can start off a game strong and finish it,” said senior varsity player Maureen Marsh.
In past years, the varsity team was repeatedly defeated against Stone Bridge, certainly a “dominate” opponent in volleyball.
“This year we’re really close as a team and I think that the feeling of us as a family has really helped us come out on top. It’s always been a goal to beat Stone Bridge, but I think the combination of athletes as well as the amazing talent caused us to finally beat them,” said junior varsity player Caroline Mannon.
The game ended in tears of joy and hugs from accompanying parents.
“I love over and I see the girl in a pile on the on the floor,” said Coach Susan Shifflet. “At one point, you get tired of getting beat down.”
Girls’ varsity volleyball continued their winning streak as they achieved a victory in district finals by 3-2 and will continue on to regionals.
