Outgoing Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jack D. Dale was hospitalized on Tuesday as a result of a “medical emergency” he suffered on Tuesday afternoon according to an FCPS press release.
The Washington Post reported that Dr. Dale underwent emergency heart surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital to treat an aortic aneurysm he suffered.
Dr. Dale was taken to Fairfax Hospital by ambulance from Fairfax County Public School’s headquarters in Falls Church after he said he was not feeling well.
FCPS Deputy Superintendent Richard Moniuszko is taking over Dr. Dale’s duties as he recovers.
The Fairfax County School Board unanimously selected Dr. Karen Garza from the Lubbock Independent School District in Lubbock, Texas to take over the position of Superintendent after Dr. Dale announced his intention to retire at the end of this school year.
The Washington Post reported that Dr. Dale was conscious and resting in the Intensive Care Unit at Fairfax Hospital on Wednesday.
