Today, October 18, Saxons had the chance to experience real world politics up close—literally. Virginia candidate Mr. Robert Sarvis of the Libertarian Party came to Langley to speak with students about his personal views and what they can do to further his campaign.
At the meeting in Ms. Allison Cohen’s room, Sarvis began by introducing crucial aspects of his campaign. “[I want to] get cronyism out of government and return to the rule of law [which] will help us get the economy going.”
Candidate Sarvis grew up in Virginia and is an alumnus of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology. During high school, Sarvis was aware of a potential career as a governor but never took it into consideration until recent years. “I was never going to pursue politics until 2011,” he said.
Before his interest in politics, Sarvis was a software and mobile-app developer. “Early on in 2000 I was working in San Francisco for software development and I got back into it in 2008 and did that for a few years.”
President of Libertarian Club, senior Jack Baird, was elated about the unique opportunity of an individual already in the field coming to speak to students at Langley. “It got spearheaded through some of our members also working in adjunct with the GSA and then members picked it up.”
A member of the GSA, junior Connor Kianpour, said, “Ivy Kenton and I managed to get him to come by calling, emailing and eventually, tweeting Mr. Sarvis. He responded in the past week showing great interest, so Ivy and I put everything together to make it work.”
