For the first time ever, on December 15th, Langley will be hosting one of the most well-known Science competitions across the nation called “Science Olympiad”. This competition, which was started back in 1984, has grown in popularity to include both middle school and high school divisions. In these divisions, schools compete in a variety of Building and Science testing events.
During this upcoming competition, Langley will be playing host for an Invitational at the middle school level.
“It is a time for students to really bring out their inner scientist in them and show off what they got. They have to be passionate about Science and be willing to work if they want to succeed in these competitions” said Ms. Leah Puhlick, coach of the Science Olympiad team.
Senior Nathanial Speiser added, “I myself most look forward to the testing events on Anatomy because that is my strong suit.”
In addition to this competition, there are also other types of Invitationals that will be occurring in January. Those Invitationals would then be followed by Regionals on March 1st. Last year, Langley’s team finished second at States, and the year before that, they finished first in States and qualified for Nationals.
Over the years, the Langley students who have been involved in Science Olympiad say that they owe the success for their great teamwork and leadership to Puhlick.
“Ms. Puhlick institutes a big role in all of the student activities and studying. She is always there if you have a question or need someone to talk to, and she knows really everything there is to know,” said Junior Amy Zhao.
This year, the team is hoping to pick up where they left off last year, and that was in one of the coveted spots in the State Finals.
