On average, the typical high school student in Virginia spends anywhere from 1.5 hours to 4 hours on homework per day, versus 1.5 or more on sports every week day during that sport’s season. Senior Tori Robinson was previously on the Langley Varsity Cheerleading team this past fall season. Varsity Cheerleading practices ranged anywhere from 2.5 to 3.5 hours every week day, with an additional 3 or more hours for Varsity football games every Friday night of the football season, and various competitions on the weekends. So the question remains, how much time do these athletes spend on homework vs. sports? Robinson tells us, “For sports about 2 hours and homework about 2-3 hours!” suggesting that typically homework takes up more time in her schedule than sports do. Many students at Langley claim that they get too much homework and with having to wake up so early and take part in extracurricular activities it doesn’t allow them to have enough time to complete their homework and really enjoy the school days. Langley High School is currently ranked number two out of all the high schools in the entire state of Virginia, making it one of the most challenging schools in the state.
Contradicting Tori Robinson’s amount of time spent on sports vs. homework, freshman Kaitlin Bonacci explains, “I usually spend about two more hours on sports than homework, because golf is a sport that takes up a lot of time”. So regardless on the sport and the grade, it seems that Langley High School students spend a remarkable amount of time on sports and homework every day of the school week and often on the weekends as well.
