Each year on October 20th, teachers and students across the country celebrate the National Day on Writing, a day dedicated to commemorating and encouraging the art. The holiday commenced back in 2009, and has been appreciated ever since.
Numerous organizations at Langley have worked to amp up publicity for the holiday, namely the Saxon Writing Center. Caroline Bollinger, senior SWC tutor, said, “The SWC is promoting the National Day on Writing to encourage people to think about writing and get excited about its importance not only in an academic sense, but also in everyday life.”
The Saxon Writing Center has furthermore implemented a new challenge for the Langley community, called the Perfect Paragraph Contest. Entries are due Monday, October 27th and flyers are available in Mr. Howard’s room (193). Winners receive an Amazon gift card and their name announced on the Saxon Scoop.
The National English Honor Society has also worked hard to contribute to the National Day on Writing. Jordan Campbell, president of NEHS, agreed that today is a reminder of the impact that writing has on each and every person’s daily life. “That often goes unacknowledged,” she said. Returning NEHS members were asked to create posters that capture the essence of the special holiday, and hang them around the school’s walls. “We hope that the quote posters around the school reminded students to value the art of writing,” said Campbell.
Shivani Gupta, member of NEHS and SWC, said, “The National Day on Writing fosters awareness amongst the Langley community about how writing transcends the classroom. Writing is such an integral part of our lives that we cannot detach ourselves from it.”
