Making the commute to Great Falls easier, Georgetown Pike facilitates a smoother drive. However, recent incidents have proven that crossing Georgetown Pike is extremely dangerous due to the fast drivers. To many, adding a crosswalk would mitigate the problems associated with crossing this road.
Freshman Daniel Leonov is currently recovering from an accident crossing Georgetown Pike. In order to avoid future accidents, Leonov supports the addition of a crosswalk.
“[Georgetown Pike’s] just way too fast. People speed there,” Leonov said. “I don’t think it needs to be that fast, there needs to be more crosswalks.”
Without a crosswalk, it takes a longer time for Leonov to get to school. With the addition of one, people who live close to Langley can commute on foot quicker.
“Anytime I have to go to school, it’s either I walk around and I have to add on an extra half a mile, or I walk through a dirt path [it’s a rocky road], I turn right immediately, and that’s where I got hit,” Leonov said. “If they put a crosswalk there, which they’re going to do […] it’s going to be safer, much faster, and more efficient.”
Not only will a crosswalk benefit people who walk to school, but Langley’s Cross Country team can run with more confidence. Assistant Cross Country Coach Grant Pettrie believes that the addition of a crosswalk will give peace of mind to his athletes and the coaching staff.
“It would give us a safer place to cross than what is currently present because we cross that road probably once or twice a week with anywhere between 30 and 75 kids, and as we know, people really go down Georgetown Pike fast, so hopefully a flashing crosswalk will make a big difference,” Pettrie said.
Runners can find that their minds are very focused when going for a daily run. Senior varsity cross country and track runner Hazel Calway believes in adding a crosswalk because of the dangers that being distracted can bring.
“I think it would make it a lot easier because you get really distracted when you’re running,” Calway said. “It would make it a lot easier to cross the road, we’d have some better routes to run, and there would not be an incident like there was last year when a kid almost got hit by a car.”
Recently, the community has found out that there is a plan to add in a crosswalk. Due to this, it will revolutionize the way people get to Langley.
“I’m very grateful that the state of Virginia is actually going to put the crosswalk in and it’s about time given that it’s a very populated area with a lot of students that do walk to and from classes,” Pettrie said.
